Hygeia - Medicine Woman

Hygeia is the goddess of health and represents the medicine woman archetype. The Greek Goddess was seen as the personification of health, hygiene and cleanliness. Hygeia's role was far deeper and broader than just this, in a deep and successful partnership with Asklepios (which also lends her a flare of the lover archetype at times too), Hygeia is considered to be the beginning of the world of modern medicine. The work she did was far more than just healing, but also preventative and she is named in the first oath of Hippokrates, where the concept of the Hippocratic Oath taken by many medical professionals originates.

However, she is so much more than just physical health. Hygeia is a goddess of and symbol of holistic wellbeing, self-empowerment and what we often refer to as "wellness". Hygeia takes our physical, emotional and mental wounds and transforms them into healing elixir replacing them with grace. How she does this is almost as enigmatic as her true identity, for while she held importance that still radiates into our worlds today, her exact identity, and how she lived and moved through the world is not clear or disputed between historians.

Within astrology Hygeia is the personification of our physical, mental and emotional health and indicated how we need to support ourselves in order for healing to occur. Hygeia shows us where we need holistic healing, or where we can bring this to others. Hygeia helps us to gain the insights that we need from these wounds and healing and she helps us to connect to higher realms of consciousness.
